What width does my server rack need?
In general, there are two widths for a server cabinet. The width of 800mm is often used if there is enough space available and if cabling is required on the side.
The width of 600mm is used where little space is available. Cabling at the side, i.e. between 19 inch frame and side panel, is not possible.
Regardless of the width of the server cabinet, the 19" mounting system is available in both cabinet widths.
What depth does my server rack need?
19 inch server racks start with a depth of 600mm and can be up to 1200mm deep. Important for the selection of the server cabinet depth is the maximum installation depth of the intended built-in devices. There should be 100mm space between the front door and the built-in device to ensure air circulation (with a closed door without perforations). In the rear space of the server cabinet, provide sufficient space for the cable management. Service work is easier if there is enough space available. 200mm free space in the back of the server rack should be sufficient. So if you have a server installation depth of 700mm, a server rack of 1000mm is well chosen.
What are the differences between server racks?
When you talk about a server rack, you often mean a rack for 19 inch technology.
A server rack can be 600 and 800 mm wide and can also be offered in different depths in several gradations from 600 mm to 1200 mm. The height can also be found in several height units (HE or U). All these parameters depend on the area of application and the spatial conditions for the server cabinet.
What carrying capacity should a server rack have?
An important difference is the load capacity of a server rack. The standard version has a carrying capacity of approx. 400kg and is perfectly adequate for most applications. The next higher load level for a server rack is the 19" Rack RTA with a carrying capacity of up to 1500kg. If a server rack is used in combination in a data centre in a hot and cold aisle system, the server rack with a carrying capacity of up to 1800kg (RDA for data centres) should be selected. This prepares you to install even heavy UPS systems in the server rack.
Server Cabinet Cooling
An often underestimated problem is the high temperatures that can occur in a server cabinet. Heat is generated by external influences and by the built-in active components. A device-compatible temperature in the server rack is between approx. 25° and 30° C. If more heat is produced in the server rack, one should think about the outflow of heat.
If the room is appropriately cooled, doors with a grid can be used with a high air throughput. Fresh air can enter the server cabinet unhindered. Built-in servers can then suck in the air from the front and release it to the rear. A perforated rear wall or a gridded door should also be used in the rear area of the server cabinet. If there are no grid doors on the server rack, fans are inserted into the ceiling of the server rack, usually fan cassettes. These create a negative pressure and the warm air is drawn from the server rack. The required fresh air is drawn through the pre-punched perforations at the bottom of the cabinet. The standard version is the fan cassette and is used in the Triton server cabinet. In areas where less fan noise is important, the server rack is used with particularly quiet fans, i.e. with a fan cassette with Silent fans.

Active components are used in the 19-inch server rack that produce heat according to their output. Remedy or cooling can be achieved by fans on the outer shell of the server rack. If you want to extend the cooling, e.g. with a compact cooling unit, the action should be considered with caution. A server cabinet with a cooling unit should be largely leak-proof. The tightness is important, because the temperature differences between the room air (which can flow unhindered through open server cabinets) and the cold air produced from the cooling unit can cause condensation, which must be avoided at all costs. You should therefore not use a normal server cabinet with a cooling unit.
